Private collections in Rethymno

Collection of Franzeskaki.

The collection of Eleni Franzeskaki is housed in the building opposite the Gallery "L. Kanakakis" in Chimaras Street and includes works of traditional handicraft such as woven textiles, embroidery, and lacework.


Museum of Sea-life.

It is housed in the old abbey, which is situated in the old town and has been restored recently. The exhibition represents one of the most important collections in Rethymno including molluscs, sponges, fish and various fossils.

Axos Mylopotamos.

Axos Mylopotamou, one hour from the cities of Rethymnon and Heraklion, is a village in a natural environment. There are exposed, in a two-storey new built area, handmade wooden works of art from a hammer and a chisel.

The dimensions of the sculptures displayed,  are life size, while some are presented in larger sizes, such as "The Eagle and the Serpent" about 6 meters long or "My parents and I" of about three meters.

Woods are collected from the island of Crete, mostly dry trees uprooted by natural disasters.

Wax Museum “Potamianos”.

The museum "Potamianos" includes 87 wax figures that depict, life-size, scenes from the history of Crete.

In a specially arranged for the museum space, are displayed scenes of Eleftherios Venizelos, Greco, Kazantzakis and other important personalities.

Folklore Museum of History - Somatas, Rethymno (private collection).

Museum of Folklore - War – History.
From 1821- to the present day.

Exhibited items: War items, folklore items, photographic material and old coins.

There is a large collection of stamps, ancient heirlooms, old agricultural tools, old household utensils, etc.

Museum of the Olive, Kapsaliana.

The Monastery Olive Press, the attached house of the caretaker monk and the storage area, with its gigantic “pitharia” (clay storage vessels) are protected medieval monuments which focus on the olive culture in Crete and can be visited, much like a museum.

The area is decorated with fascinating artefacts from the days the Olive Press was in use.

The Museum is dedicated to the memory of the area and the cultural heritage of olives and olive oil.

The mill of Prinari, Chromonastiri.

A magical journey just 7 km from the junction of Missiria, takes you, by following the signs, to the central square of the village Chromonastiri.

The old factory (oil mill) of Prinari, fully renovated, with all its old equipment, that can work and today, operates as a Training Centre for Information and Culture of olive oil and Mills.

In a specific room there is all the equipment of a  traditional house of the middle of last century, back when the houses were just one room, which means that all activities of the 'home' life, was in a single space.

Papageorgoulakeio Folk Museum, Asomatos.

Papa Michalis Georgoulakis started collecting various objects when he was 15 years old.

He wan an open-minded man for his time and that is the reason he left behind an unusual and unique collection of Cretan life of the last century.

With his unique and incredible tenacity mania for detail, Priest Michael managed to create an original museum with everyday objects, antiques, military memorabilia, religious objects, etc.

The Oriseum is   decorated with lamps, candles and flowers from the family home.

The Priest died in October 2008, at the age of 87 years, leaving behind a life's unique work.

In accordance with the wishes of Pope Michael, Oriseum continues to be operated by his son George and his bride Romi. The exhibits are explained in 4 languages (Greek, English, German and French).

Apart from an idyllic cafe and a souvenir shop the area of Oriseum is also used for cultural events like concerts and live music.

                        Papageorgoulakeio Folk Museum.

Spiritual - Cultural Center Anestis and Manolis Anagnostakis.

Manolis Anagnostakis 1925 - 2005.

One of the leading poets of the first postwar generation with origin from Roustika Rethymnon, the birthplace of his father.

He studied medicine and specialized as a radiologist in Vienna.

His poetic work identified a group of militant poets of postwar poetry.
Some of Manolis Anagnostakis poets were combosed by Mikis Theodorakis and other Greek composers and translated into foreign languages.

The spiritual - cultural center Anestis and Manolis Anagnostakis is housed in the family home, which was donated to the community of Roustika by the poet himself.

There someone encounters the collections exposed by his life and his work.

The house of “Polios”.

A special traditional coffee shop "The house of Polios" which  someone encounters in the village of “Asteri” Arkadi.
There the customers can enjoy the traditional products and visit the folklore museum.

The museum is a traditional Cretan house of seven rooms housing textiles, old photographs, reception rooms, etc.

The traditional coffee house has a yard where someone can see tools of traditional professions.

The cafe is created by George Polioudakis who believes that "visitors are aware of the Cretan tradition and lifestyle of the Cretans.”

“Kate & Andreas Fragkiadaki”.

In Roustika village located 20 km west of Rethymnon, in “ROUSTIKA MELATHRON'' is housed the Museum of Traditional Greek costumes “Kate & Andreas Fragkiadaki”.

The museum is unique in Crete for the richness of its costumes from all over Greece.

 It is part of the Traditional Greek Folk Art Center
